The Flamingo is the oldest operating casino hotel on the Las Vegas Strip, opened in 1946 by mobster Bugsy Siegel. While the interior has been heavily modernized, the Flamingo still carries a unique historic weight β and its wildlife habitat (a free exhibit with live flamingos, pelicans, and other birds in lush gardens) is a pleasant surprise in the middle of the Strip. Fontainebleau Las Vegas finally opened in late 2023 after a 16-year construction saga that included the 2008 financial crisis forcing the project into bankruptcy. Designed by Betty Willis in 1959 and never trademarked (she donated the design to the public domain), the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada" sign stands at the south end of the Strip between Mandalay Bay and the Nevada-California state line. The sign is a free, photogenic landmark that has appeared in hundreds of films and TV shows. A small median parking lot allows visitors to walk up and photograph it.
